Acid Reflux
Treatment Facts
Acid reflux treatment starts with
the cause
One fact of life is that man cannot
live without food. Food provides all the vitamin and minerals
we require and all other vital nutrients that give us the
energy to work and fight a series of diseases which we could
not do without food. However certain food can be bad for the
digestion and if we do not watch what we eat, then we could
soon be looking to acid reflux
treatment as a means of combating the foods that
have upset the digestive system.
Everyone should know that the
digestive system breaks down the food the body needs. Stomach
acid breaks down the food and turns it into amino acids, fatty
acids and sugars (glucose). They are then absorbed through the
lining of the intestine and transported into the bloodstream.
The foodstuff is transformed into a liquid in the stomach which
is mixed with the gastric juices (stomach acid). The stomach
acid in question is hydrochloric acid and it would literally
burn a hole through you if left to its own devises. The
stomach is protected against these acids by forming a dense
layer of mucous that lines the stomach. However the esophagus,
where the food passes first before entering the stomach is not
protected from the stomach acid. So when acid from the stomach
enters the esophagus it can literally burn the lining. The
sensation that you feel when this happens is
heartburn.
Heartburn
Heartburn is the first symptom that most people
with acid reflux disease experience. If acid reflux
remains untreated, the condition becomes severe and you
will end up with gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Another thing that you might experience is regurgitation,
where the food that you just ate will not stay in the
stomach and can reflux right back as far as the mouth. The
chest pain will get worse, you will have difficulty in
swallowing the food, until finally, you might get asthma,
and when acid reaches your mouth, it will naturally
corrode your teeth.
But don’t worry. Acid reflux can be
cured but it would greatly depend on the severity of the
disease and how you manage it. One of the main culprits of acid
reflux disease is a small flap of skin and a circle of muscle
at the base of the esophagus acting as a valve to stop stomach
acid entering the esophagus. This valve is called the lower
esophageal sphincter (LES). When it does not function properly,
you'll suffer from acid reflux. The heartburn sensation is due
to the rising stomach acid level with which the esophageal
lining can't withstand.
Acid reflux
treatment
Acid reflux treatment can be done
through medication, lifestyle changes, and surgical methods.
The treatment is aimed at eliminating acid reflux completely
from our system.
The mainstay and one of the short
term cures for acid reflux is antacids. People use this method
frequently, and it can be taken in either tablet form or as a
liquid. Some prefer the liquid from more because it is easily
consumed. You can take antacids after you've eaten, probably
after 30 minutes to one hour. This is the usual type of
heartburn treatment for mild heartburn symptoms. However it is
best to use this type of heartburn medication if the symptoms
of heartburn are infrequent. If you have heartburn more than
once a week other stronger heartburn medicine should be
taken.
Another form of heartburn medication is
called a foam barrier. Foam barriers consist of an antacid and
a foaming agent in tablet form. When the tablet dissolves in
the stomach it creates a foam-layer that floats on top of the
liquid of the stomach and creates a barrier to the liquid that
would normally reflux and stomach acid is prevented from
penetrating through it. But make sure that you chew the tablet
well so that its maximum healing properties will be released.
One such heartburn medicine is called
Gaviscon.
Yet another acid reflux medicine is
called H2 receptor
antagonists. It works against the histamine that is
produced in the stomach. Histamine is a chemical that
stimulates acid production in the stomach. The H2 receptor
antagonists work against the histamine which then blocks the
production of the stomach acid thereby reducing secretion and
concentration of acid which can cause heartburn. These tablets
can be bought over the counter and have a longer lasting effect
than antacids on your heartburn. You should however see your
doctor for a diagnosis before taking this type of acid reflux
medication.
A newer and more powerful type of acid
reflux medication are called Proton Pump Inhibitors. They
work by stopping acid production. The main advantage of PPI, s
is that they are more effectively block off acid, and their
effects work for a longer period of time. Usually only one
tablet per day is needed. They are also good for combating
other problems attributed to acid reflux also. Not only do they
cure heartburn but they are also heal inflammation of the
esophagus. They are taken usually before a meal so that they
are active when acid production is at its peak, which is after
eating.
what next to do about acid reflux
Most doctors recommend a change
in diet to those who suffer from acid reflux. Though this may
be difficult for some, they may not have any other choice
unless they want their acid reflux condition to worsen. Don’t
wait until you need a surgical method to cure your GERD. It is
best to start curing acid reflux as soon as you discover that
you're suffering from it.
If you’ve experienced the symptoms of
acid reflux, immediately consult a doctor. Gather information
about acid reflux, to help you in better understanding your
condition and applying your new knowledge to your lifestyle.
The doctor can provide you with the correct diagnosis and the
acid reflux treatment you need as
well as what changes you may need to tale to your
life.
